Grow Up by William-John-Holly Grow Up by William-John-Holly
I haven't drawn anything terribly cluttered in a while. Wanted to alleviate that. I also wanted to do something kind of screwy with the perception of the scene and how it's laid out.

I also admit that I had to brighten the blue ink a bit in photoshop because the scanner had turned it pitch black. Maybe I should be using a lighter blue pen.

I like terribly cluttered. Means you'll never see the entire picture the first time. I dunno, I looked at it and thought the chaos outside the window represented the outside world to a sheltered child who was in a clean sterile room. I like the contrast of that too. And the small accent of color popping out vs the white and grays. Good job :)

this is creepy and sweet. I like the complete lack of emotion that somehow also conveys terror on the little huddled guy in front of the closet. Almost Freudian. Good stuff.

Intricate as a bad childhood... which reminds me the4 dear we use to have when we were kids... of the night, shadows and loneliness. Nice work!

This is so great... you managed to combine the lingering interest that cluttered style invokes with the poetry of simplicity framing it profoundly.... the small touches of color are also put to great strategic use... just awesome...

Thank you, I'm glad you like it! I've always tried to make my drawings something completely unique, though if you want to see more art that is similar in style to my work I've been told repeatedly that my art is very much like Superjail, a cartoon on Adult Swim. I haven't seen much of it myself but everybody seems to be in consensus that my art is reminiscent.

I can see super jail being like this. I imagined some of those drawings from the children's story books like "where the sidewalk ends" I can't remember who made those. Not necessarily because the style is the same, but because the subject mater.

Some of your work has a bit of a Ralph Steadman (british cartoonist) look to it.

I was feeling awfully burnt out on a lot of things that used to bring me a lot of joy, like videogames and drinking and watching hilariously bizarre videos and the such. I formed an idea to draw a character in an empty world turning his back on a world full of fantastic imagery, with perhaps a happy version of himself amongst them. It's not necessarily supposed to be clear if the world of fantastic imagery is this character's past or future. The only thing I wanted to be certain is that that little guy in the fetal position is going through one hell of an existential crisis about where he is in life.

Thanks much for the kind words and the favorite, I really, really appreciate it :)

that was very well thought out! i appreciate you explaining it. i like the way it looked, which first caught my eye, but i immediately wondered, why is that sad dude sitting all along and to me i thought it looked like me with a lot of bad memories (i'm bipolar and also my childhood wasn't the best, so i have lots of things i can't/won't think about) trying to get at me. it's very thought provoking. since i'm bipolar, i go from loving things to hating them and back again etc. it can be weird and i think it feel like what you're talking about. and you're very welcome!
